Rocksource article in First Break

In the May issue of First Break, a journal published by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), employees of Rocksource have published an article where they discuss the potential and limitations of the CSEM technology for hydrocarbon exploration. The findings are based on a comparison of synthetic studies with real data were well data can be used for control.

Rocksource had, by early 2009, analyzed close to 70 CSEM survey lines, covering close to 60 prospects. Two of the prospects that had clear CSEM positive anomalies have later been drilled as discoveries by other oil companies. Another four wells have also been drilled on prospects where Rocksource CSEM interpretation concluded that no hydrocarbons would be found. All of these wells were dry. A further four discoveries and one failure have been successfully used to test the technology, one of these being a blind test. The 11 wells (five dry wells and six discovery wells) are distributed around the world as follows: one is from the Mediterranean, two from the North Sea, one from the Norwegian Sea, two from the Barents Sea, three from offshore India, and two from offshore West Africa. In all 11 cases, the data analysis and interpretation was in full agreement with the well outcome suggesting excellent reliability of the interpretation.

The Chief Editor of First Break comments to the article that the authors “provide what is probably the most realistic assessment to date of the potential exploration applications for the marine controlled source electromagnetic survey method, supported by statistical data from around the world.”.

Chief Technology Officer of Rocksource Geotech, Jonny Hesthammer, comments that “the current statistics are highly encouraging both for the CSEM technology itself and for Rocksource’s ability to use such data in their exploration efforts. The current industry challenge is to handle CSEM data properly, which requires numerous advanced modelling and inversion studies of each individual data set as well as integrated analyses. The significant experience gained by Rocksource over the past several years together with their proprietary software and work processes have provided the company with a unique opportunity to take advantage of this emerging technology.”
