Rocksource article in The Leading Edge Journal

Rocksource employees have, together with co-authors from EMGS, published a scientific paper in The Leading Edge, an American journal owned by the organisation SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists) with 35,000 members.

The article evaluates statistical results from wells drilled on prospects or fields containing CSEM (Controlled Source Electromagnetic) data. The key finding is that the average success rate for exploration wells drilled on prospects with a significant CSEM anomaly is twice the average success rate for wells drilled on prospects without a significant CSEM anomaly.

John Howell, Chief Technology Officer at Rocksource ASA commented: “The data provide increasing evidence that the appropriate application of CSEM data in a portfolio setting will improve exploration drilling success rates in CSEM suitable areas. This empirical data, published in a scientific journal supports Rocksource’s CSEM lead exploration strategy.”

Of 86 wells with associated CSEM data, 50 are exploration wells drilled after the acquisition of CSEM data and 36 are calibration surveys collected to test the technology. This represents the largest database available to date. Of 22 calibration surveys acquired over existing discoveries, 19 (86%) show a significant CSEM anomaly with normalised anomalous amplitude response (NAR) value for the fundamental frequency above 15%. Of the remaining 14 calibration surveys acquired over prospects that are proven dry, 13 (93%) show no significant CSEM anomaly. When disregarding all calibration surveys, 28 out of 50 wells are discoveries. When isolating wells drilled on prospects with a significant CSEM anomaly, 21 out of 30 exploration wells are discoveries. For exploration wells drilled on prospects without a significant CSEM anomaly, 7 out of 20 wells are discoveries. This provides a success rate of 70% for wells drilled on prospects with a significant CSEM anomaly, whereas it drops to 35% for wells drilled on prospects without a significant CSEM anomaly.
