Rocksource in GEO ExPro
The latest issue of the magazine GEO ExPro (2009, Vol. 6, pp. 29-30) features an interview with Chief Technology Officer in Rocksource Geotech, Dr. Jonny Hesthammer. The article discusses the importance of having available a suitable toolbox and experience to allow for integrated processing and analyses of CSEM data. Hesthammer expresses the importance of always doing extensive analyses, including detailed modelling based on proper G&G input, to allow for risk modification of seismically mapped prospects. He underlines that, while seismic data provides information on acoustic impedance (which is equal to the density of rocks multiplied with the velocity of rocks), CSEM data provides information on resistivity contrasts. The resistivity parameter provides the geoscientist with information directly relevant for hydrocarbon exploration. Commonly, the value of CSEM data far exceeds the cost of acquiring them.
Rocksource has currently analysed close to 60 CSEM survey lines, mapping a similar number of prospects. Two of the prospects that had clear CSEM positive anomalies have later been drilled as discoveries by other oil companies. Another 3 wells have also been drilled on prospects where Rocksource CSEM analyses suggested that no hydrocarbons would be found. All of these wells were dry. A further 5 discoveries have been successfully used to test the Rocksource proprietary CSEM technology, one of these being a blind test. Furthermore, Rocksource has identified 12 prospects with positive CSEM anomalies that have not yet been drilled, several of these associated with the 20th Round work on the NCS. A further 38 prospects have currently been classified by Rocksource as negative or inconclusive. These statistics and successful tests clearly demonstrate the value of the CSEM technology and the capabilities of Rocksource to handle CSEM data in all parts of the work flow.
