Rocksource solves EM challenge

The latest issue of GeoEXPRO (www.geoexpro.com) publishes an article on EM technology based on analyses carried out by Rocksource. The article describes how a difficult case is solved by applying an advanced integrated CSEM processing and analysis approach. The final result of the processing is also shown on the front cover of the issue, displaying an image where the EM anomaly matches a gas-water contact observed in the seismic data.

As a part of emgs testing their SBL technology, several EM lines were collected in 2003 over known discoveries. The most famous of these is the Troll Field SBL study (www.emgs.no) that documents a very strong EM anomaly related to the hydrocarbon-filled reservoir. Another SBL line was collected over the Luva gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea. However, this data set showed only a weak anomaly and this has puzzled scientists for the last few years. As a part of Rocksource testing their proprietary technology and advanced work flow approach, the Luva data were made available to Rocksource by emgs. Rocksource scientists have been able to process the data in such a way that an EM anomaly is now clearly visible.

"The Luva case demonstrates elegantly the potential that this technology has in future hydrocarbon exploration, but it also illustrates the complexity associated with the processing of such data. In difficult (probably most) cases, such as Luva, it is necessary with an iterative interpretation process which brings in geological understanding and repeated processing of the data. This is at the core of Rocksource's technological competency," says Jonny Hesthammer, Vice President Technology of Rocksource.

Rocksource entered in March 2007 into a contract with ElectroMagnetic GeoServices AS ("emgs") for the acquisition of electromagnetic data on the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) during the summer and fall of 2007. This campain is currently ongoing and will allow Rocksource to test a large number of prospects by utilising the company's EM technology and interpretation skills. The results from the EM campaign will be used to select prospects for drilling and to select areas for future license applications.
