Reservoir Technology

The last 20 years have seen the development of advanced computer based technologies for dealing with subsurface uncertainty and managing the development of complex reservoirs. Large, expensive offshore developments are now routinely modeled using purpose built software that allows the visualization and numerical simulation of the reservoir in a computer. Such software allows improved understanding of the reservoirs, including their internal geometry and the may in which they will behave as they are depleted. This allows the optimization of well locations and development strategies that have greatly improved recovery factors (RF = the amount of oil produce vs the amount originally in the ground) to the point that in the Norwegian North Sea RFs of 50 – 60% are not uncommon.

The history of modern reservoir modeling software is strongly rooted in Norwegian industry and academia, were much of the currently available technology continues to be developed. The staff of Rocksource have been, and are currently, involved with the further development and application of these technologies.

While the use of reservoir management technology is relatively common in expensive offshore developments it is not typically applied to smaller onshore fields were conservative operators have long preferred more traditional approaches. Rocksource is working to apply these proven technologies in areas were they bring a significant upside by reducing risk and enhancing recovery. Rocksource believes that understanding the geology and applying the best available technology is as applicable to small onshore fields as it is to major offshore developments.
